What A Gem

On Monday, looking at the forecast I thought the Mothing potential for the week looked very gloomy indeed! But, last night saw a bit of a gap in the weather so the Robinson trap went out in the front garden...am glad it did too!

This morning I had 116 moths of 34 species to look through, which included this (male) Gem...

My first record of this migrant moth - very welcome indeed :-)

Rest of the catch looked like this: 56 Heart and Dart, 5 Common Marbled Carpet, 6 Vine's Rustic, 5 Flame Shoulder, 4 Green Carpet, 4 Small Square-spot, 4 Treble Lines, 3 White Ermine, 2 Red Twin-spot Carpet, 2 Peppered Moth, and singles of: Common Swift, Cream Wave, Purple Bar, Common Pug, Double-striped Pug, Common Wave, Waved Umber, Willow Beauty, White Pinion-spotted, Brimstone, Lobster Moth, Pale Tussock, Buff Ermine, Peach Blossom, Buff-tip, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Heart and Club, Large Yellow Underwing, Angle Shades, Bright-line Brown-eye, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Middle-barred Minor and Spectacle.

I just couldn't allow my third, and this year's first Peach Blossom go un-photographed...

MMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Today's Lobster Moth. If you think it is named this way because of the moth you are wrong...check out the larvae

Thanks to Nigel Pinhorn's advice, there is a new book on my book case....

My only photographic moth guide

What I say to any potential buyers... please don't let the '...quite simply sensational' comment by (moth expert!?!?!?!) ALAN TITCHMARSH put you off!

It is FANTASTIC with superb photos of 500 micro moths, over 850 macros AND 350 pics of larvae, pupae and eggs. It's all laid out in a very easy to use way too. This is a super addition to my ever-growing collection.

Lastly, in fear of this blog being shut down by the internet Police for not 'being what it says on the tin', this pair have been regular in our front garden of late...

I do love Bullfinches!

  2. Thanks! Seems to be very poor for migrants on the whole so far this year though doesn't it. I want to look into my trap and find a whole heap of Silver Y's!
