Nightjars

So our Nightjars have returned for a fourth year, which is brilliant news.  It wasn't until last night that I had a chance to get out and see them, the conditions were absolutely prefect but sadly they didn't come out until 21:45 so it was pretty dark.  I saw a male and a female, but only the male showed well enough to video (just!)...

Also saw a Hobby on patch yesterday, only my second here this year. It was hunting over fields just south of Colyton then drifted off west. Looked to me like a loitering bird as opposed to a late migrant - hopefully they are breeding somewhere nearby.

  1. I've been up recently too - at least 2 adult males and a female. Did you get eaten alive as well?! I went home rather spotty and itchy!

    1. Hi Tim. Yes it was like a war zone when I was there! Interesting you've had two different males? Are they on separate sides of the site or have you seen them interacting?

    2. They were both beyond the high point where the path changes direction slightly (hopefully that makes sense) but not particularly close to each other. Heard them churring at the same time and had one flying whilst the other was perched. They didn't seem to pay any attention to each other, and interestingly neither of the males seemed to be chasing the female yet either.
